A Little Intro
The word Yakkha can be roughly translated as “the source of power.” Sri Lankans of the ancient times lived in four tribes, namely, Yakkha, Deva, Naga, and Gandharwa. They recognized the great power and strength that existed in nature, and utilized it for their own lives and for creating a legacy for future generations.
The greatest power on earth is the power we get from the sun.
The ancestral Sri Lankans knew that it was the power of the sun that sustained all of life and nature. Because of this, out of great respect, they worshiped the sun. The tribe which practiced the sun worship were the Yakkha.
The Yakkha were so called because of the immense strength in their hands.
Further validation for this interpretation of the term “Yakkha” can be found in Buddhist scripture. the Gauthama Buddha once said in a sermon “ahampi yakkho” – “I am Yakkha” – meaning that a Buddha is a great source of power. The music (Nada) created by those strong hands who recognized and lived according to the balance of nature is… Yakkha Nada.
